A CLEAN SLATE.
THE COLONIES' ADVANTAGE. I
i UNTRAMMELLED BY CUSTOM. I
(Received 8.10 a.m.)
LONDON, June 11. The Earl of Dudley, Governor-General-elect of the Commonwealth of Australia, was present at a pageant at Dudley Castle. Speaking at a banquet tendered him in recognition of his appointment, he said he would act on Mr. Joseph Chamberlain's advice to a former colonial Governor to say nothing about Australia until he came back. He believed in the nobility of public service, and was unable to see why a politician was less willing to serve abroad than a soldier among a young, virile, warm-hearted people who inherited British tradition, but who, being untrammelled by the customs prevailing in the older countries, had the advantage of a clean slate.
