NEW ZEALAND "TATTERSALL'S.
TICKET SELLERS FINED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Before Mr Riddell, S.M., to-day Charles Frederick Priest, tobacconist and hairdresser, pleaded guilty to a charge of selling unlawfully at Petone a ticket by which permission was given to the purchaser thereof to have an interest in a scheme by which prizes were gained by mode of chance. Chief Detective McGrath stated that the defendant had sold to a constable in plain clothes two tickets in a sweep on the Wanganui Steeplechase. Twonty>-nve thousand subscribers at two shillings each were supposed to enter for the sweep, the first prize to be £750, the second £300, third £100, and others to divide £200. Defendant charged 2/3 for each ticket, reserving 30 for himself as commission.
Counsel stated that accused did not know he was breaking the law. Only fifteen tickets had been sold in Petone, and the money had since been returned to the purchasers.
Defendant was fined £2 and costs. Percy Simpson, his assistant, was fined £1. John Turner, on a similar charge, was lined £2.
