DEFENCE OF MOTOR LAUNCHES.
When the petition was read at the meeting of the Harbour Board yesterday afternoon, from ovvnere of steam boats, objecting to persons being licensed to ply for hire and do towing, who were not certificated, Mr. W. J. Napier said this really resolved itself into a question as to whether public convenience was to be increased by permitting motor j launches to ply for hive, or whether tiitu. should be reserved for the smaii steamers. jlf they decided to confine it to steamers then it would be a retrograde step. At i the same time it was bard to take away the living from certificated men. One thing was certain, however, the Board must not diminish the facilities for the general public getting about. Mr. Kneen said Mr. Xapier was entirely wrong. \s a rule people in charge ! of oil launches did not understand the rule of the road, a.ad were a menace, 'is the launches! were flying all rou;jd the harbour. He thought that the Boav.l I should see that people knew the law of the road before they -were licensed. Finally the matter was referred to the Committee-
