At yesterday ' afternoon's meeting of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, the proposal to start a rabbit freezing factory in -.uckland was brought up for dls- -,', DU i S,S „ U ¥ r . JoUn Massey said the Department of Agriculture was anxious to have an expression of: opinion 'from'the Association ou the question of starting the rabbit freezing industry in the Auckland Province He had been approached by au officer of the btock Department, au Uithad been pointed out to him that if farmers were allowed i ??_ i for the unrestricted breeding of n.obitSj it-would be a menace to the.nas-toi-ul Industry, if rabbit freezing was ouce coniinenced in Auckland, farmers nilglit begin tq cultivate the rabbit. This would be a great inconvenience to those pastoialists running sheep and cattle. Personally he did not believe the question would appeal to farmers iv the Auckland Province. Mr Salmon said thousands of rabbits were at present coming into Auckland ' every wees. - - ■• - r Mr Massey stated that, not 30 miles from Auckland, there were fanners who bred rabbits for the Auckland market. It v/as -uggested that other Associations with provlnw g hould be co_b.rjiuui.ated Mr Muir said that there was so much clear land In the Immediate vicinity of Auckland that there was little likelihood of the rabbits guiulug much of a footing, but Iv bush country they would soon get out of hand if not kept down. ' * The chairman said ' that in the Walkato the Agricultural Department had 100 men employed in keeping down the rabbits It was resolved, on the motion'of Messrs R. Hall aud J. Thompson, to refer the' question to the Franklin, Waikato, .and Rotorua Association for an expression or 1 opinion. -,:--. !
