SCHOOL INSPECTORS SALARIES.

COMPARED WITH SOUTHERN - • DISTRICTS. '." THE. INSPECTOR'S POSLTION. A motion by Mr. L. J. Bagnail, at the meeting of the' Auckland! Education Board to-day, proposed the payment of an increased salary by the sum of £25, to each of two of the Board's inspectors. Messrs. Crowe and j Grierson. Mr. C. J. Parr expressed his -belief that the salaries of all the inspectors in the Board's service should be increased, and stated that, in Auckland they were paying less-.than in Canterbury and Otago. He thought that they should bring their salaries up to the figures prevailing in the Southern districts. Many of the headmasters in the Auckland district were, with allowances, getting more than the inspectors, and he could not approve of the latter, -who were supposed to have authority, being placed in an inferior position as regards saiary. The payment of travelling expenses was balanced by the hardships of winter work in the backblocks, and in. proof of this he would say that few headlmasters of large city schools were willing to become inspectors. He would move that all the salaries of the inspectors be increased. Mr. Edgeeumbe pointed out that for the position of inspector, a vacancy filled ]ust previously, there had been forty applicants, which showed that there were plenty of men willing to put up. with the conditions. | Mr- Mackenzie opined that to make salaries in the North equal to those in j the South would create a tendency for ' a general movement in favour of the j former, and for. men to come North. Mr. Bagnail concurred with this view,' and stated) that his intention was for the Board to recognise the long .services of the two inspectors. There were only three other districts in the Dominion where higher salaries were paid. Mr. Parr's amendment was lost, and Mr. Bagnall's, giving increases to the two inspectors, was carried.
