DUNEDIN- REMITS TO THE-TRADIS
CONFERENCE.

DUNEKEN, this day.
The Otago Trades and Labour CouncU has formulated' the following remits for presentation at the conference of Trades Councils to be held at -Wellington in the first week of next session.
1. That the Conference be asked to recommend abolition of the late closingnight now existent in shops, in order to bring grocers, drapers, and other shop assistants under the same hours of labour as prevails in trades, and that the Government be urged to introduce legislation to provide for a universal compulsory Saturday half holiday. ; 2. That the Government be urged to introduce legislation to restrict the importation of labour under contract, ■whether male or female. '
3. That the Government be urged to introduce legislation to provide' (a) ; parliamentary franchise to apply to electors of all'local bodies; (b) every elector to nave the right to vote on all questions subject to a poll. ' ■ 4. That the Government be urged to establish clothing and hoot factories, flour and woollen mills, bakeries, iron works, and iron shipbuilding yards, and to nationalise the marine, coastal and intercolonial service.
5. That the Government "be strongly urged to introduce a bill into Parliament, to so amend the Industrial Coiciliatien and Arbitration Act so as to provide for statutory preference, of em* ployment to unionists. 6. That the Government be urged to amend the Electoral Act, making it illegal- for any candidate for parliamentary honours to make donations within three months of an election.
7. That the Government be urged to adopt a self-reliant policy, and to cease borrowing except for the redemption of loans, and to issue legal tender State notes for the purpose of completing important railway lines now in course of construction, and for other germanents and reproductive -works, with a view to providing a permanent currency as 4 medium for exchange in the internal trade of this Dominion.
S. That the Government be urged to amend the Shops and Offices Act 'to give the police power to see that the provisions of the Act are complied with.
A committee was set up to frame remits dealing with the constitution of conciliation boards, also amendments to the Conciliation and Arbitration Act, Workers' Compensation for Accidents and National Annuities Bill, and to submit the same to a future meeting of the Council for adoption.
