OBITUARY.
Mr. Walter Jones, head "of the fancy goods department of Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co.'s warehouse, died, yesterday at tto age of 53 years. Mr. Jones liad been connected with the firm for over 37 years, and he was their oldest and most trusted servant, having conteolted the fancy goods department for upwards of'a quarter of a century. Mr. Jones, who is survived by a widow and four chfldren,' was a splendid all-round atWete. and was of a kindly genial disposiaion which made him very popular. In his younger days he was a fine gymnast and boxer, and he was the founder of the old Ponsonby football dub, in -which he played as fullback _and captain. He represented Auckland in the seventies. Mr. Jones waa one of the finest yachtsmen' who ever yet handled a boat, and Ms services as steersman were always in demand -when races or matches w-ere to be decided. Of late years lie has been an enthnsiaetic bowler, having been a member of the POll-' sonby'Clnb for several seasons.
