THE NEW TRAM CARS.

The Epsom barn presents a very busy and animated scene to-day. About a fortnight ago huge cases could be seen on the road en route to JEpsom. These cases contained the component parts of ten new tramcars which arrived from London by theUakaia. On Wednesday last a gang of ten men. under the foremanship of Mr. J. Scberff began the task of fitting them together, and to-day the. last of the consignment was set up", and all will then be ready for the cabinet maker and engineers to begin the work of fitting in seats and other interior arrangements.

This -morning a "Star" reporter witnessed the erection of .the last car. Firstly the body of the car mounted on the bogies, and with the roof covering the lot was run under a specially erected: shed. Hen by means of pulleys the roof was lifted arid raised to a sufficient height to permit of -the'sides and ends being placed in position. "All hands here!" sa.ng ott fc the .foreman, and in less than six minutes by the clock the curved ends were in position. Then the centre partition and the other partitions separating the conductor from the motorman and the platform from the body of the car were;put up, and in another half-hour all was in readiness for the setting up of the ponderous sides. This completed, the roof was lowered into position, and the car sidetracked to receive the attentions of the carpenters, joiners and painters. lie- new cars are somewhat different to the old type. Both ends are rounded off and a glass partition which can be opened or closed at will protects the motorman from the elements. Between the motor-man's domain and the body of the car a considerable platform space has been allowed. Owing to the glass front of the cars the motorman's gear has had to be placed in a horizontal position instead of vertical as is the case with the old cars.

No time is to be-lost in getting tKe new oars painted and , the interior fixings put up, and it is anticipated that they * Trill shortly he placed, in -commission
