SPEECH DAY.

DIOCESAN HIGH SCHOOL.

REMARKS BT HOX. MITCHELSOX

Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, there was a very large attendance of parents and friends at the annual prizeH,"h S « * n ■ ™ uaecUon with tbe Diocesan tUsh School for Girls, at Epsom, yesterday a * t " n ° ol i- The Hon. Mr Mitchelson occupied the chair, and Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice was also present, besides the members of the Council.

The Hon. E. Mitchelson. in the course of his opening remarks, said this was the third speech day" in connection with the school, though it was four years sinc° the schools inception. He spoke of the pleasure it gave them to welcome Sir Robert Stout to the school. It was not the first time that Sir Robert had been invited to attend, but hitherto his important duties as Chancellor of the University, and Chief yusnce of the Dominion, had him from accepting their invitation. He lookta upon bir Robert Stout as the foremost cnampion of educational interests in New a a ? n rf"-ffi T , h ? y would all remember the great difficulties the Council had had to contend with. They had met with strong opposition in the early Etages, not only from their own people, but from other denS ' wheD U was vr S ed that the school was not needed. Now, after a lapse *%?J? b ? en ac Weved. Unfortunately the school was launched out under circumstances which were not all that could be desired. The school was launched without the sinews of war, and it was not possible to make bricks wuhout proper material. If it had not been for the assistance rendered the Council by fneads who were strong in their advocacy of the school, during the earlier days, it -would not have made such excellent progress. It now exceeded their most sanguine expectations. In referring to the growtn of the school, and the extensions made to the school buildings, ilr Mitchelson said two years ago they thought the additions then made would suffice for some ££ cSTrSMS COT" pleted, and now the head mistress informed them that it was imperative that further, additions should be made. He was of the opinion that they had put up enough' wooden buildings. Preparations were being pd SSA.TSSS °LTL£ e J 0 ° p £ IFF?" -"-— WS? S2S" SmKJS^T^-S^Lm" ?er ? Ql ,? f the headmistress.
