RISE N PRICE OF MEAT.
(To the Editor.) i Sir, —One of tho first articles that caught tbe attention of my eye in tonight's "Star was the proposed rise in the price of meat; owing, it is stated, to the spell of fine weather. Now, it is all very fine for the butchers to spring this lame excuse upon a now over- . burdened public, but there is a limit to all things, and I think the cost of living has about reached a climax, as regards meat. This old-time excuse that scarcity j of feed, etc., has resulted in the stock j becoming inferior is a very paltry one. It is time that matters as regards living were altered. Take, for instance, the price of New Zealand meat at Home, and ' wo find that after going 13,000 miles by boat people can buy cheaper than we I out here, where the thing is bred, born, ' and fattened. I know it is advisable to '• keep a market tor export, tut why j starve us here to keep this market j abroad, when we are crying out for a 1 cheaper food here, and which can be sup- i plied us at handsome profit? The same ■ thing applies to our butter, and if things go on rising at the rate they are doing j it will ultimately drive people from our I shores to places where they can live ' cheaper, and so cause a slump and a ' falling off of our population.—l am etc March 13th. _\ \j.
