HOSPITAL AND DOMAIN.
The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board do not appear to be very particular about keeping their word to the City Council in the matter of the shanties that were erected on the Domain some years ago in connection with an early plague scare that never developed. Last year the Board intimated that these buildings would be removed on the completion of the infectious diseases hospital., Now, the infectious diseases wards were' sufficiently advanced to permit of part being used in November. Instead of the work of demolishing the rough wooden structures that disfigure the top of the rise being put in hand immediately in redemption of the promise, the matter has been shelved. At yesterday's meeting it was decided to retain the buildings in case a possible typhoid outbreak might find them a use in providing temporary accommodation. Ear too much latrtuffe has already been permitted the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board in this unwarrantable encroachment upon the Domain. The erection of the buildings in the first instance was a flagrant infringement of the public rights, and their continuance and extension has been in the highest degree reprehensible. The time has come when the City Council should adopt strong measures. A notice should be served forthwith on the Board to have the buildings removed within one month, and in the event of the I Board's failure to comply with the order the Council should set its workmen to do what is necessary. One thing is certain—this usurpation of a public recreation reserve cannot be tolerated any longer.
