A SEVERE WINTER.

TEMPESTS ON BRITISH COAST. BERLIN FROZEN. (Received 8.15 a.m.) LONDON, January 8. The extreme cold and severe frosts of the last few days have been succeeded by a rapid thaw, making the traffic conditions even worse than before. Severe tempests are raging on the British coasts, but so far no damage to shipping has been reported. The streets of Berlin, where intense cold has been experienced for over a week, are a sea of ice, the glassy surface being very slippery. Hundreds of pedestrians have been injured by falls, many being seriously hurt.
