WHANGAREI NEWS.
(By Telegraph.— Oivn Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Tuesday. The monthly Court was opened before Mr. R. \V. Dyer, S.M., to-day. Five residents of Whangarei were charged with having beeu unlawfully ou the licensed premises of Jagger's Hotel, I'arua Bay. Mr. Moody and Mr. Mcrvyu Wllsou appeared for the accused, arid admitted that they went to the hoteJ for a drink, but were refused by Jaggcr. After argument, Mr. Dyer held in terms of Judge Cooper's ruling ou a similar case last year, that the accused resided three niiies away on the previous evening, and they, therefore, had a bona fide right on the premises. Mr. Dyer also ruled that their presence on the premises was legitimate; but if the publican had suppiled drink he would have been liable, aud the accused exempt. A young man charged with having assaulted a young girl was lined £0 7/6, or in default oue mouth in gaol. Mr. Jas. Stewo-t, the Government flax expert, and Mr. McGregor, flax culture expert, arrived iv Whangarei this morning. Mr. Kean Clarke left for Auckland to attend the Dental Conference.
