In this engagement a retired British major named Davies was lulled and Lieutenant George Gordon wounded. All the rebels were captured. It is stated that tloo,ooo had been raised in London and New York, and that the filibusters landed separately as traders;
[Binas Geraes is an immense state of Eastern Brazil, immediately to the south of Bahia. It returns 37 deputies to tile Brazilian Chamber of Deputies .-or 15 more than any of the other JStates. According to the later constitution Slate must be organised under the republican form of government, and must have its administrative, legislative and judicial authorities distinct and in-de-pendent. The Federal Government cannot intervene directly in the local government of the States. The population of Mina Geraes is about 3,500,000, and the area 221,890 square miles.]
