FEDERAL MAIL CONTRACT.
Hitch in Negotiations.
(Received 10.7 a,m.)
MELBOURNE, this day.
A hitch has occurred in the mail contract negotiations with the Orient Company. Both the Federal Government and the Company are reticient, but it is gathered that the cause of the dispute lies in tie treatment of butter exporters and the connection of the company with what is known, as 'the five lines combination." It appears that negotiations wera proceeding harmoniously between the Federal Government and the company until the State Government intervened, and succeeded in creating a deadlock. The Victorian Government, it seems, demands that the Orient Company's connection with the " five lines combnk-.tion " shall cease, and that there shall be no differentiation between those butter exporters who have contracted to send, all their butter by the lines embraced in the combination, and those ■who divide their trade with oatside companies.
