Mr E. J. French, of the Colonial Mutual Life Company, loft for Sydney on a business trip by the Mokoia last evening. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin. states that Sir James Mills is to be entertained at a citizens' dinner in the second week of November. Mr. W. R. Blow, of the Government Tourist Department, has left for Rotorua to take up his new duties at the office there. ~. , Mr. T. W. Kirk, Government Biologist who has been attending the Fruit-grow-ers' and Agriculturist Conference at Adelaide; will arrive home from Australia oh November Bth. Mr. E. W. 'Alison, MLH.R., has been granted an additional seven days' leave of absence from his Parliamentary duties on account of ill-health. Mr. Charles J. Dennes, of the wellknown firm of Dennes Bros., underwent an operation on Monday night. Although his condition is critical, hopes are enter- , tamed. for his recovery. Our Waihi correspondent telegraphs that Mr. Gallichah, general secretary j of the Liberal and Labour Federation, arrived at Waihi this morning, and will probably give an address on Thursday j night. Mr. G. Rothwell, chairman of the London board of directors of the Waihi Grand Junction Gold Mining Co., left Auckland last evening by the Mokoia for Australia, en route for England. Mr. Rothwell has been visiting. Waihi on business in connection with the. company. His son, Mr. A. G. Rothwell, accompanies him to Melbourne, and, after spending a short holiday, returns to Waihi. News was received by the English mail yesterday, of the death of Mr. T. B. Whytehead, registrar, chapter clerk, and chamberlain of the Dean of York, at Acombj Yorkshire, on September sth. Mr. Whytehead, who was 67 years of age, was a native of Yorkshire. At different tines he was.engaged in \he New Zealand . coastal shipping trade, the South Sea Island trade, the service of the British India Company, and was also intimately acquainted with New Zealand bush and goldfiSlds life. He was engaged in journalistic pursuits both in Auckland arid in the Home Country, before being appointed, in 1886, to the position of registrar and chapter clerk, which he held up ,to his death. Deceased was a Past Grand Officer in connection with Freemasonry, both in New Zealand and in.England, arid held manyother high positions in other branches of the organisation. He is survived by his widow, four daughters and four sons. The remains were interred at Acomb on September 7th, a very large number of relatives and friends, including a host Of Freemasons, being in attendance. '. The crowd which assembled to pay the last respects to the memory of the deceased was: indeed so, great that a'strong force of police was on duty to prevent a. crush. At the graveside service many feeling tributes were paid by the officiating ministers (Revs. Canon Fleming, R. P. T. Tennant and Hi R. Whytehead), to the life and excellent qualities of. the deceased. :.;. ';'.
