GREY LYNN PARK.

(To the Editor.) Sir -—I should like to know if the Grey Lymi ratepayers have satisfied themselves that the Council's, proposal, j» really for the benefit of the whole borough. I think _ matter of sach importance should net be allowed to pass without some comments from the burgesses,, who will in due course be called upon'to pay the special rate therein mentioned. As one of those who are not yet quite convinced of the wisdom of undertaking sueb;a heavy responsibility, 1 venture to submit a few questions which 1 .hope may have the effect of arousing a little interest in the matter, and eliciting' some expressions of opinion (both lor and against the proposal), for the guidance of those wlio will be asked to vote on the question at the meeting next Thursday. (1) Are the ratepayers of a small borough like this justified in committing themselves to an expenditure of £4500 per annum, for the next live years, making streets and roads, etc., in a new locality, whilst the streets in the centre of the borough are in their present unsatisfactory condition for wait of funds? . (2) Will the Bank be -willing to sell their land at its present value (if required) or will they wait until the streets are made is. the expense of tne ratepayers, so as to get inflated values for it? (3) What will it cost to make the park, fence it, and keep it in order, to be of any benefit to the residents and their children? (4) How will the money be raised for this purpose? Will still another loan bo necessary? I notice the proposal in the Council was carried without dissent, but what the Councillors individually said, or thought, is not recorded. We are told that the ratepayers will be fools if they refuse such a .splendid oiler; but 1 think they will be still more foolish if they allow the proposal to be carried without taking the trouble to ascertain if they are doing the right thing or not.—l am, etc., FK-J-L-ANOE.
