Bain, Whangarei; p. D. Duxfield, Nga* ruawahia. The funeral of Mr Joseph T. Cowdelt took place yesterday ,(says our Whangarei correspondent). ■ All_;the Masonic bodies .attended in regalia. The deceased, was well esteemed, having resided in the district for about'l6 years. The more recent guests at the Star Hotel include Mr and Mrs Murdoch, Kaipara; Messrs G. F. Gardner, Paeroaj E. Cartier, Whakatane; R. J. Sime, Sydney; J. A..Stewart, Wellington; E. Creswell, London; Mr and Mrs A. Chouquel, Hamilton. New arrivals at the Graad Hotel are Dr. Endlesberger (Matamata), Mrs Marsh (Waikatb), Mr and Mrs Lawry North,. Miss Handyside (Napier), Messr3 T. H. Julian, H. T. Miller (Wellington), W. A. McCummings (Christchurch), A. V. Purser (Palmerston North), Miss G. Hardinge, Mr and Mrs C. E. Baker (New Plymouth). At the annual meeting of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, Remuera, on Wednesday, special reference was made ta the great loss the congregation had sustained in the death of Mr R. B. Heriot, for many years a loyal and devoted elder and superintendent of the Sabbath school. It was decided to erect a memorial tablet in the church, and an enlarged photograph of the deceased gentleman, presented by the Sabbath scool teachers and scholars, is to be hung in the hall. Mr. John Hay, Commissioner of Crown Lands in Southland, died, last night. He had held ■ the office of Commissioner foe six years, and previously had done a great amount of survey work in Souths land. He was born in 1849, and joined the Government service on May 5, 1567.Abeut 1897; he was appointed chief surveyor for Otago. The first illness that he had experienced was an attack of measles a few months ago. He got up, too soon,, and pleurisy supervened, followed by jaundice. Until a few days ago nobody doubted his recovery, but. cancer of the liver was diagnosed onMonday.
