MANAUKAU COUNTY CONFERENCE.

The conference of Manukau County local bodies was continued after we went to press yesterday, when the following bus-r ness was* transacted- -. M_d_ter__<_ of Great South-road. — it was resolved, on tlie motion of Mr tamitn. seconded by Mr Comrie, that the faove-n----ment be asked to take over and maintain Uie Great South-road. It was proposed Dy Mr Chalmers and. seconded by Mr "U"" 1 ; "That this Conference is of opinion tnat the Government should t_ke pver and maintain aU mani roads. _«, Hunua Falls. — A motion by Mr Smith, j seconded by _tr Fitzpatrick, -Tnat tne Government be asked to purchase the | Hunua Falls, as a tourist resort," wa_ Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. — It was decided, on the motion of Mr AUen seconded by Mr Smith, that the present mode of voting for members of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board be altered to the system of voting need by the Education Board. An amendment by Mr Brady, "That the Parliamentary franchise be applied," Lapsed for want of a seconder. Local Bodies' Franchise. — Mr Allen proposed, Mr Smith seconded, and it was carried; "That the local bodies' franchise remain as at present." Pine Trees. — A motion by Mr Keith, that no person be allowed to plant pine trees within two chains of the road, lapsed for want of a seconder, as did a motion by Mr Usher, that no free be allowed to be planted oh the.northern side of a road running due east and west. Mr Comrie then moved, and Mr Smith seconded, "That no tree be allowed to grow higher than tne distance"" planted from the road." The motion was lost.

Mr KeitJi moved, and Mr Comrie seconded. "'That power be given local bodies j to compel owners having willow trees growing in water courses to clear same." Mr Smith pointed out that under the Drainage Act, local bodies already had that ; power. After discussion, it was decided to j take legal opinion on the matter.

Axrctioneers. — A motion by Mr Andrews, seconded by Mr Brady, to .the effect that the City Council be asked 'to collect auctioneers' license fees and distribute them amongst the local bodies and adjacent districts where stated'sales are held, and that provision be made for so -doing in the Local Government _Vet, was carried.

Scoria. — Mr Usher moved, anu Mr Smith seconded, "That subject to the approval of the local bodies, scoria be supplied to ratepayers at the same rate as to the local bodies.

Dog Tax. — A resolution, "That owing to the cLestruction of sheep by stray dogs, the Government be requested to pass legislation, making it compulsory on all local bodies to collect dog tax. at a minimum charge of 5/, and a maximum of 10/, and that a numbered register be kept," -was moved by Mr Smith and seconded by Mr Comrie and carried. Carrying Live Stock. — Mr Brady moved, "That the Government be requested to provide a truck for carrying calves to the market, and that all live stock be carried with as little delay as possible." Executive- — The following Executive was appointed for the ensuing year: — Messrs Smith, Chalmers, Usher, Comrie, Andrew, and Allen. The next conference was fixed, for June next. ■ Trains. — Mr Comrie moved, and Mr AHen seconded, "That the Conference renew- their r__nest for an early and late train to Pukekolie during the summer months.
