♦V %■ m 5?^ d of Dr - Spew's lecture at the V.M-C.A. Hall last evening was -well attended. The" subject of the evening was "Foar-fourths of a Man;" which was treated in a masterly and inipressibe manner by- the lecturer, who demonstrated the value of moderation in diet, in the development of the muscles, and in thought This evening's lecture will be upon "The Science of Success," and to-morrow evening the subject will be "America's Wonderlands." To-morrow niternoon a lecture will be delivered to women only.

GOOD INTENT LODGE.

The half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Good Intent Lodge. 4369, M.U., I.O:O F was held last evening in the Oddfellows' Hall, Cook-street, there being a very large attendance of members. Bra J. Booker, who was recently elected N G presided. The half-yearly balance-sheet showed that the lodge had made excellent progress, both as regards finance and numbers for the last sis months, the membership now totalling 411. The sum' of £61 had been expended in funerals, and £270 16/8 In eick benefit. The lodge funds amounted to £1803 16/U, showing a net increase for the period of £354 3/1. It was also shown that the whole of the available funds. of the lodge were closely invested and drawing interest regularly- The officers for the ensuing term were elected as follow: Bro. J. Booker, N.G.; Bro. C W Merfin, V.G.; Bro. J. Stewart, E.S.; Err.' W. Dean, secretary. The trustees are - -- Bro. J. MeLeod, P.G.M., Bro. P. X Wheatley, P.P.G.M.. and Bro. C. Huge, P.P.G.Mand the auditors, Bro. W. McMillan, P.G., and Bro. H. B. Massey.

COOKS' TOURS.

At the Foresters' Hall, Newton. la"<t nigbr, a capital series of world, pictures, grouped under the title of "Cooks' Tour," was exhibited, when-there was a good attendance for the unfavourable state of the weather. The pictures covered a wide range of subjects, and" the entertainment provided afforded genuine enjoyment.

CANTATA AT DEVONPORT.

The Devonport Methodist Church was well filled on Friday evening last when a combined thoir and orchestra of over nfty performers, under the leadership of Mr F. h: Grfbbln, renaered the contata, "A Joyful Thankßgiving." The cantata was preceded by. a short concert, comprising selections by the orchestra, soios- (encored) by Miss Emily Moon and Mr E Roscoe, and a flute solo, admirably played by Mr A. K. Wrigley, who showed himself an accomplished flautist, and was enthusiastically recalled. Tie cantata was rendered in a manner highly creditable to the performers and their conductor, . the solos, etc.. were taken by Mesdames Schmidt, K. J. Clark and Smith Miss Bartlett, and Messrs Brougbton and Boscoe, and each number was received with applause. At the conclusion, on the motion of the Bey. S. Griffith, a hearty vote cf thanks was conveyed to Mr Gribbin, the singers, and orchestra. The proceeds were for the enlargement of the Sundayschool.

GOOD ■ TEMPLARY.

The Grand Marshal, Bro. G. Clark, proceeded to Huntly on Friday last, accompanied, by Sister Clark, V.T., No. 107, to institute a Good Templar lodea A large number attended the meeting held on Friday evening, 35 members being initiated into the order as- a result. The !odt;e was named the Huntly flxcelsior. No. 48, and there Is every evidence of a strong lodge resulting from such a good beginning. Next week a .lodge Is to be Instituted at Onemmga. making eight lodges within a radius of eight mSes from Auckland.

EIRKENHEAD AND NORTHCOTE FRUITGROWERS' ASSOCIATION.
