A TRAMCAR COMPLAINT.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Much annoyance and some accidents have occurred owing to the practice conductors have of giving the signal to start when they are inside the car, ana so unable to see what is going on. Several cases have come under my own observation; a lady friend was getting off the car, when the conductor, who was in the car, pulled the rope before she was clear, and she fell and received a severe shaking, which confined her to her bed for some days. Again, some six or eight persons were waiting for a car; one came with lots of room, and the gentlemen made way for the, ladies to get on first. Immediately the signal was given, and the gentlemen were left. When the conductor was asked why he did not take them on, he replied he did not see them, nor could he inside the car. Twice a lady member of my. own family while in the act of stepping on the car had it go away, narrowly escaping an accident from the same reason, the conductor being inside the car. A motorman saw two passengers waiting, stopped, one jumped on, the bell was. pulled, and off went the car, leaving the other looking at it. It is time the company insisted that conductors should go to the rear of the car before starting it, as some serious accident will be the result. How long is it to be before all the cars are fitted with electric bells? It is a long time since the coroner's jury made tne recommendation.'—l am, etc., '-. ■ - PASSENGER.
