AUCKLAND RAILWAY LEAGUE.

A meeting of the Council of the Auckland Railways League was held yesterday afternoon to consider the action to be taken during the session to bring the objects of the League directly under the notice of members of the House. Mr. G. L. Peacocke, chairman of the" League presided.

A letter was read from the secretary of the Waiuhu Railway League, asking whether the Auckland League wouia place on their programme the question of the construction of a branch line connecting Waiuhu with the main line a.t or near Pukekohe. It was resolved to send a reply informing the Waiuhu people that while sympathising -with the objects of their League, the Auckland League could not see its way at present to include this branch line in its active programme.

The chairman expressed the opinion that the Waiuku connection was a work that must certainly be taken up at some future time. But at present he thought the Auckland League must concentrate its attention upon the more important main lines of railway communication, such as the North Auckland and the East Coast railways. A telegram was received from

Mr. N. Finlayson, member of the Otawatea County Council, informing the League that the statement reported to have been made in Wellington at a deputation which waited upon the Acting Minister for Public Works to the effect that the County Councils Conference had advocated a survey being made of an alternative route on the western side of Maungaturoto, was incorrect.

Mr. Finlayson asked the League to contradict the statement, and it was resolved to forward to the Minister Mr. Finlayson's informationi and to add that the League always had refused to interfere with the decision of the Public Works Department on the question of the particular route selected by the Government engineers. - ■
