Played ou the Eemuera ground. One of the fastest games of hockey witnessed this , season. From the buHy"B_rry beat Elands. ' and Miller passed to Doyle, and the right , wing carried play to 'Varsity's seventy-nve, ! and centring "wefl. a good shot was well stopped by Hectare, who transferred to ! Tynsley, and the latter passing r.<> AlderJ j ron. the blues' forward passing w:is sot in , i motion. A mishit by Wouiler enabled > Sheriffs to remove the danger, and an exchange of hits by the back divisions ended ' in Ivissling passing to Barry, but L'nited's ' centre was too anxions, and drove the ball outside the posts. From the ensuing bully Rands was checked by Porter, and passing ■ to Doyle, again tie bines were on the defensive, and Speight conceded a corner. Intercepting the shot, Alderton passed to Jacobsen, Rands, ami Northcroft. and with a pretty passing run had United in difficulties, but Douglas rose to the occasion, and with a hard drive the Cnited's forwards indulged in some neat passing, and a smart shot "by Doyle secured the white's first i goal. University were now aroused, and play travelled up and down the iield at a fast, rate, r.ill United conceded a corner. Alderton drove hard into the circle, and Rands stopping well secured a neat goal. With scores even, both teams displayed ranch dash, little or no advantage being held by either team, till fnmbliug on Wooller's part allowed Brown an opportunity, and a good pass to Doyle enabled the right wing to transfer to Barry, and the United centre, with a clever field, dashed away, and added the second goal. From the bnlly Barry. Miller, and Morpeth took the ball" to the bines' circle, and just on half time 3arry added his second goal, and the spell finished United :i, 'Varsity 1_ The second spell opened with a strong attack by United, bnt only resulted in Miller thriving the bail outside the piwts. But j the whites were not to be denied, aud continuing to have considerably the best of the game, tested the 'Varsity defence, aud from close play in the circle. Baity and Porter added goals for the whites. With such sudden reverses the bines pulled together, ans again placed United on the defence. A line hit to the bines resulted in Sheriffs intercepting, and removing the danger, but only temporarily, for Ziinan passed to Tynsley. and transferring to Rands, enabled the centre to add 'Varsity's second goal. 'Varsity now had the best ot the game, and j the worst of fortune, several good shots i just missing the posts. A face hit brought relief to United, and Brown sent the ball I well np the field. Play now hung about j midneid. for 'Varsity. McClure and Ziman i showing to advantage, while Barry, Doyle. | and Porter were doing good work for the j whites. Bloonifield intercepted a passing | run by the bines, and with a long pass to j Porter, h* transferred to Morpeth, and Barry dashing in. added United's fifth goal. University now tried hard to equalise" the score, bnt good chances were lost by poor and erratic shooting. The pace wals now j beginning to tell, and both forward divi- i sions were tiring, bnt Rands, Tynsley. and '• Alderton. with good passing, had United j in trouble, and the whites relieved by eon- I cr-din-i a corner. Brown sent the ball ont I at half way, and from the throw-in the [ whites secured possession, but 'Varsity's I defence conid not be broken again, and the whistle sounded time with United winners by 5 goals to i Mr E. Madden gave every satisfaction as referee. AUCKLAND AY. PONSONBY. !
