MELBOURNE MINT ROBBED.
• A MYSTERIOUS THKFT.
BARS WORTH £1700 REMOVED. MELBOURNE, June 4. Tyawc bars of gold, valued at £1700, have mysteriously disappeared from the Melbourne Mint. Mr Pasise, a Bendigo gold boyer, brought the gold to the Mint after the TwafTT building had closed, and the constable in charge of the police at the Mint lodged it in the "Wtnt sate, to which, there axe only two keys, the constable ■holding one and the master of the Mint the other. He locked the safe. When it was discovered 1 that the bars were missing, the safe was opened in. the usual way and there were no signs of tampering with the lock. The constable kept the key in his pocket. Between the time of placing the gold in the safe and the discovery the police guards were changed thrice. Inquiries are being made. The supposition is that by some means the key had been abstracted and replaced ill the constable's pocket. (Beceived 9.58 ajn.) MELBOURNE, June 5. Further information shows that the constable left the key of the Mint safe in the pocket of his waistcoat when he went to bed. The thief must twice have entered the room to get it and replace the key. Mr Pascoe. in handing over the gold on its arrival, had signed the usual document exonerating the Mint, police authorities, and officer-in-charge in the event of its being stolen.
