CHINESE REBELLION.
SEVEN HUNDRED KILLED, CAUSE OF THE RISINGBRITISH WARSHIPS READY. (By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 8.23 a.m.) PBKTN, June 3. The Chinese rebels have been defeated between Amoy and Swatow. It is stated authoritatively that no fewer taan 700 of their number have been killed.
Two thousand drilled Imperial troops have now reached Swatow to deal with the situation.
It appears that the trouble has arisen from the failure of the Chinese officials to distribute food in the famine districts.
The British and American fleets are concentrating at Pakhoi and other ports of Southern China to be ready for action in the event of the trouble spreading further afield.
