A.R.C. WINTER MEETING

532 —Mrs C. 11. Washer's eh g Vizier Jiyrs, by. St. Cyr — Volterina KIATERE WINS THE 6 f AT XOBTH- SteVni g ;: ERX STEEPLECB AtE - } ' 10.0 (Mr C. Selby) ..."

The second day's racing;.."> f on ," with tbe A.X.C. Winter Meeting took place at Ellerslie yesterday, iu inne weather. There was a good attendance, 3W K. is. Lusk officiated as judge, Mr A - K °k n as timekeeper, and Mr O'Connor as starter, the latter gentleman being..in good form. The racing throughout was interesting, the steeplechase especially betas a S oou race, the eleven starters .i um P ln S beautifully until the top of the hill was reached the last time, when Mooltan ana Nadador fell at the first and second fence 'respectively, and Nor , -West fell at the sod wall leading into the course. As on the first day. tbe gathering was well conducted by the various. ofßdals, under the secretary (Air .1. F. Hartland), ererythiny passIng off without a hitch. Before racing commenced, the stewards sat to consider the running of Catch- , em in the Maideu Hurdle liace onSaturday last. bat after hearing the statements of the parties concerned, accepted; their explanation ad entirely satisfactory. Speculation was again brisk, aud during the afternoon the machines, under Messrs H. 11. Hayr and Co., handled the sum of £10,944 10/, of which was passed through the double machine, which returned the good price of £14S 1/, The amount handled is an increase on last year or £1661.

After the Maiden Hurdle Race and Banfurly Welter had been decided, the field saddled up lor Tne big eveit of tbe clay, the Great Northern Steepleciase,. for which eleven names appeared on the board, the withdrawals being Nestatoi, Slow Tom, Inniskillen, Evenlode, Romany King, Pharos, Loch Fyne, Brigham. and Silica. As the field paraded in the birdcage, they «mc in for a lot of attention. The topweight. Kiatere, looked lighter than nsua., but old Haydn looked a jfttnre, as dtu Nadador. Irish showed no signs of tie severe race he had ou Sjtarday. wulicWaitarerc bore a well trained appearance. No fault could be found with Khama, and the old veteran carried a jaunty look and stepped around the ring like a youngsrer. Sammy was hardly noticed, but Cachucii, Mooltan, and Kangitoto all, hart their admirers, the last-named, in particular, boing fancied. The race was ■ beautiful one to watch, and the display of jumping a treat to witness, aud as mentioned above, there were no mistakes mide until four fences from home. Irish and Sammy made the pace solid for the greaW part of the jonrney, but when the hill came to be tackJted the last time, llaydn. Ktona, aud Waitarere comprised the leading division, while Kiatere could be seen gradually creeping up on the leaders. As th!j raced aown the hill, Khama was in front, aud a great shout went up, "Khama wins!" which was ;soon changed to "Waitarere Bins!" when it was seen that the Povirua Wrse had taken Khaina's measure as they cime to the last fence, and the race rerUinly looked to be all over, when suddenly Kiatere appearec on the. scene, and putting in a great run, caught Waitarere inside the distance, and settling him lv a stride, drew out in the concluding singes, and eventually won easily by three lengths from AVaitarere, whien tired badly, but managed to last long enough to beat Khama l>y a length for second honours. Kiatcre'a performance was a great one, and he vral] i-o'serred the reception he received on returning to seal» A I lot of credit is Jue to his rider, W. Wll[Bon. who rode a nice, patient race, never bustling his mount at auy part of the journey, with the- result, tor., when ho called on him for an effort, he was equai to responding. Kiatere's vlttory gave V\i!son his second winning ride in tno event. Previous winners arc:— i WINNERS OK THE CHEAT NORTHERN 1 STEEPLECHASE. Time, m. a.
