THE CATERINGS CASTAWAYS.
BECTJED BY THE TCKAKINA.
STRANGE STOST OF A DOG.
CBy Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
The steamer Turakina, when she arrived at the Crozets in search of the shipwrecked crew of the Norwegian schooner Caterina, bad some difficulty m finding the locale of the men owin<* to hazy weather.
Detonators were fired, but still there was no sign of life. The vessel then shifted to the larger island, and there being a hut on the beach., the Turakina again fired detonators. This had the desired effect, and the castaways came on the beach and danced in an exuberance of spirits at being rescued. A couple of boats were lowered from the ocean liner, and in a short while the shipwrecked men were on the deck of the Turakina.
The castaways told a strange story of a dog which attached itself to the party early on the day of their rescue. Long before the appearance of the steamer the canine capered inordinately, which contrasted strikingly with its woebegone deportment some time before. This is attributed to the animal's -wonderful sense of smell of the chamois housed on the fore-deck of the Turakina.
