The many friends of Dr H. D. Jones Trill be pleased to learn that he is now making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Dr Savage, under whose care he is, performed a very delicate operation when his life was* in extreme danger.

Dr. Mason, Chief Health Officer of the colony, is leaving Wellington for Auckknd on the 14th. He will probably address meetings there in furtherance of Ms consumption crusade. Dr. Mason will subsequently visit the Cambridge Sanatorium on business of a purely departmental character.

One of the oldest residents of Whangaiei, Mr. W. Boult, died there yesterday morning at the advanced age of 93 years. She -was born at Xunhain, Xorj'olk, England, and came to this colony 54 years ago. During the last 49 year's 3lrs. Boult resided at Whangarei.* She is survived by two sons, three daughters, 17 grandchildren, and 12 gt.-at-grandehildren.

Dr. Lewis, of Auckland, has been appointed by the Board of the New Zealand University to examine in surgery at the Otago Medical School annual examinations, held in Dunedin about the ma. of Jannary. Dr. Lewis, who leaves ■ria the Wanganui for Danedin to->nor-JW, is the first Auckland surgeon to be Ejected as an examiner at th» Dunedin ifedieal School.

Mr E. V. Senn, ■'jrho has been chief clerk at the Auckland Pos£ Office for the past seven years, leLt by i;he West Coast boat to-day to take up hife new duties as assistant inspector for t"ne Midland district of the South Islan-A. Mr Scnn carries with him the good Svishes of all his fellow officers, who h five extended to him tbeir hearty congratulations upon his promotion. He has been 31 years in the service.

Among the Taviurri's passengers from Suva last night wef<i Air. and Mrs. John Langford. Mr. La ngford, who has recently retired froci the Fijian Government service, joine a the Fijian Civil Service in 1871, when the Government was formed under lirng Cakobau, and when the islands were annexed in 1874 by Great Britain he xeeeived an appointment under the new ];ule. His service, which extends over 32 years, began with a clerkship in the Colonial Secretary's office, and in 1878 he was appointed as chief clerk, and e?terk of the Legislative Council. He was later promoted to be Supreme Court Registrar and Curator of Intestate Estates. Advancing years and indifferent health are the reasons of his retirement.

A London Press Association cablegram announces the death of Dr. Burdon, the eminent Chinese scholar. The late Dr. Burdon, who was ordained in 1852, undertook mission work in China from 1865 to 1572. He was Bishop of Victoria (Hangkong) from 1574 to 1595. The Nc-w Testament and Book of Common Prayer were translated by him into Chinese
