The sacred cantata, "David the shepherd boy," was given in the Trinity Methodist Church last Wednesday night, by the choir, assisted by friends. There was a large audience. The soloists were Misses Sil] and C. Mansell; Messrs. H. Robertson, W. Firth, W. Rutledge Crocombe and B. A. Kayes. ifr. W. H. Flett presided at the organ, Misa A. Wheeler at the piano, and the con- ■ luctor was Mr. A. Williams. ! Frank Fletcher, of Cook-street, a carter employed by Mr E. Turner, while j harnessing his horse in Welle3ley-street I yesterday, was severely kicked in th& face and ribs. Constable Ross finding that the man's face was bleeding prtf-' fusely and that his ribs were apparently broken, had him conveyed to the hospital in an ambulance. He is making: satisfactory progress. H.M.s. Torch, whidi was placed ftcommission some months ago to take the place of the cruiser Pyramus, now laid up owing to defective boilers, returned to Sydney on Friday last after a cruise among the islands. At Kwai, in the Solomon Group, Commissioner Woodford landed for the purpose of investigating the ch'cumstances connected with the alleged abduction of two Kanakas by the chief of an island tribe. The Kanakas in question were passengers fr olll Queensland by the schooner Ivanhoe, when that vessel was wrecked some time ago. An armed party was landed iot the purpose of intimidating the natives of the village. The natives were called together, but little satisfaction was obtained; so tli« Commissioner tow them in shell money for having detained the "boys" *rom Queensland. The mission accomplished, the Torch steamed to Atta, where the !ast of the schooner Ivanhoe was seen piled high on the ree . \ The natives had looted the schooner. After making a call at Mallu, the Tore" arrived back at Gavutu on August W. and there Mr Woodford disembarked. . On August 14 the Tc;-ch jailed ** *""' bane and Sydney.
