LOCAL BODIES' SUBSIDIES.
PROTEST AGAINST PROPOSED
LEGISLATION.
The Local Authorities Subsidies Bill, now before Parliament, is a measure having great interest to local bodies, inasmuch as it proposes to alter the basis upon which subsidies are payable. One proviso is that where the total capital value of ratable property in any borough exceeds £5,000,000 no subsidy shall be payable. Under this proviso the city would lose the £450 a year now received by way of subsidy. The town clerk (Mr. H. W. Wilson) telegraphed to the Auckland members of Parliament drawing their attention to this fact, and pointing out that the City Council strongly objected to the loss of revenue without a corresponding relief from liability. In reply to these telegrams Mr. F. Baume replied: "Have lately conferred with Aitken on this matter, and will do best to protect Auckland." Messrs. Poole and Kidd replied: "Wβ are watching Subsidies Bill with care. Committee set up report will not favour loss of subsidy. Members generally do not like measure in present shape." The bill provides that the maximum subsidy to Dβ paid to any one borough shall be £350, instead of £450, as at present.
