Dr. Hugh Owen is at present spending & fortnight's holiday in Tβ Axoha. The Hew Woolley was a, passenger by the Barawa to-day for New Plymouth. Mr J. Farrell (Mayor of Grey Lynn) i-eturaed from his visit to "Wellington, in connection with, the Municipal Conference yosterda-y. Cable, news has been received of the death in England of Mr. Wm. Lornax, of Wellington, who for thirty-two years >vas inspector of works for Messrs. Ross and Glendining. Dr. Chappel. of "Wellington, who is visiting England, was invited to attend the annual conference of the British Institute of Journalists, which opened at Dublin on September 1. Mr. E. S. Crawford, formerly of the [Wellington ofliee of the Union Company, and- more recently representative for the company at Vancouver,, has been appointed traffic manager at Wellington. Lady Plunket has consented to "he patroness to the branch of the Young Women's Christian Association just iorraed in Wellington. Her Excellency is also patroness of the branches in Auckland and Christcbufhli." "Mr Robertson, late manager of the TWanganui Freezing Work 3, arrived by the Itarawa this morning, from. Ne\r route to Whangarei, where be will visit the Kanio springs,., v Mr*. Grace Xeill, inspector of hosViitals and oilicer-in-charge of St. Helens Maternity Hospitals, has been this week in Auckland on an inspec-' lorial visit. Mrs. Neill returns Soutli on Sunday next by way of the West JJoast. Mr. H, M. Phill.ipson. President of the 'Auckland Fruitgrowers' Union, returned from Wellington yesterday morning, having attended a special conference of imitgrowers to discuss various important matters affecting the welfare of UCew Zealand orchardists. At Baker Bros.' office yesterday a pleasant ceremony took place, Mr Ward ■JJaker being presented by his office staff with a travelling bag and dressing case. 3lr Baker, accompanied by Mrs Baker, is about to make an., extended holiday through Australia. The Council of the Auckland Law ■Society passed an unanimous resolution yesterday approving the appointment of Mr C. E. MacCormiek as a judge of the Native Land Court, a position for which the Council considered his special knowledge, experience and high character eminently qualified him. . The ■'Australian Christian. World" of September 14th, 1906, -has the following paragraph: "The Rev. J. Wilkins, of Auckland, N.Z.. has accepted a call to 2s T orth Adelaide. Upon being seen by la "Star' j-epreseutative, Mr. Willcins said the statement was incorrect, and; added that he had never contemplated accepting a call to Adelaide. Sydney newspapers announce the death of Mr. H. J. Bartlestt, advertising ■manager of Messrs. Antihony Hordern! iand Sont=. The deceased Had been connected with the firm for twenty-two years. He came out to Sydney in the first instance as private secretary to .the late Mr. Anthony Hordern, jun., s)iid lie had been, associated with the I firm ever since. For the greater part of the time he had had control of the ■whole of the advertising -work. His daily announcements in the newspapers attracted a good deal of attention.
