HAMILTON, Wednesday.

A large and representative meeting of farmers, held in Hamilton to-day, discussed the proposal to take over McNicol and Co.'s auctioneering business, and turn it into a co-operative concern. The matter was freely considered, and resolutions were passed affirming the desirability, and starting a co-operative business. An influential committee was appointed with power to enter into negotiations for the purchase of the business and issue a prospectus. Great enthusiasm Yvas shown, and it appears probable that the matter will be heartily taken up throughout the district.

In the Magistrate's Court to-day several Maoris charged with sly grog-selling at Pi*ka, 30 miles from Morrinsville, were fined £5 and costs, being their first offences. In the case John Casey v. W. McKee, claim £81, commission *on the sale of property, judgment was given for defendant Yvith costs £5 18/.

The Waikato Licensing Committee met to-day. Transfers were granted as follows: Hamilton Hotel, W. Bright to F. Raynes; Commercial Hotel, J. Smith to A. Raynes. In consideration of applications with reference to the Cambridge, Te Awamutn, and Kiliikihi Hotels, was deferred till the next meeting to see what improvements are effected in the meantime. A conditional license was granted to the Waikato Hunt Club. With regard to F. Henwood, licensee of the Star Hotel, Kihikihi, who at the last meeting was given three months to quit, the chairman said the committee had visited the place and found it so beautifully kept that they decided to allow Mr. Henwood' to retain the license.
