DEVONPORT FERRY COMPANY'S WANTS.
Several matters connected with the requests aent to the Harbour Board by the Devonport Ferry Company were dealt with at the meeting of the Board yesterday afternoon. The Works and Tariff Committee reported as followe on the letter .received. from the Company:—
(1) Slip elte at Devonport: That consideration as to slip site at Devonport be deferred, pending Mr Ixtgan making Inquiries in relation to the matter from Devonport Borough Council. (a) Northcote Wharf: That the .Devonport Ferry Co.' be requested to Inspect plans In engineer's office +o ascertain if the lines of angle of wharves shown will suit their requirements. (3) Blrkenhead^Wharf: That the Devonport Perry Co. be informed that thJe matter Is now being provided for. (4) Victoria Whnrf: That the Devonport Ferry Co. be Informed that dredging is now belnj* done to provide deeper water, and that the Board cannot at present undertake the extension of Victoria Wnarf. (5) Gates on Victoria JVharf: That the Devonport Perry Co. be'authorised to erect gates on Victoria Wharf near ferry offices, in order to efficiently control the vehicular and passenger traffic. (6) Notices on ferry buildings: Th*t the Devonport Ferry Co. be permitted to place in convenient positions on ferry buildings notices in relation to the business of tne company only. (T) Water supply to steamere: That consideration of the matter be deferred nntll October next. Mr Philson said with regard to clause 3 that it was not proper to give the Company the right to erect gates at Victoria Wharf. The gates should be erected "by the Board, and the control given to the Company, otherwise in the event of an opposition Ferry Company being started there might, be trouble about the gates. If the Ferry Company erected the gates it might refuse to let another Company use them. Mr Philson moved that the gates be erected by the Board. Mr Keyes said lhat was what he understood to be the intention of the committee. The clause was then altered to read that the gates be erected by the Boar J, and -in that form the report was adopted. Mrs Johnson's tetter objecting to the slip being leased to the Ferry. Company was referred to the Works and Tariff Committee.
