THE CHORAL SOCIETY.

A COUBIEOUS OFFER BZ ME. J. C.

WniiIAMSON.

The resource of Mr. J. C Williamson's Opera Company now- playing at His Majesty's Theatre was exemplified to-day, when it became necessary to relieve Mr. Charles Kenningham of the part of Marco in "The Gondoliers," owing to his having been laid up with, a I severe cold. Mr. Kienningham's understudy is Mr. Walter Whyte, the well-known tenor, formerly a resident of Auckland, and it devolved upon Mi Whyte to fill the role. The services of Mr Whyte, however, had only yesterday been premised by Mr Bracy on behalf of Mr J. C. Williamson to the Auckland Choral Society in their performance to-night of "Judas Maccabaeus," and it seemed th'sen that the Choral Society's concert would have to be postponed. At this crisis Mr Henry Bracy came forward, and rather than break faith with the promise made to the Society's president, agreed to himself appear as Marco in "The Gondoliers." The difficulty was overcome, and while the Choral Society gets the benefit of Mr. Walter Whyte's services, the public will have the opportunity of seeing Mr. Bracy in one of his favourite characters, for Mr. Bracy's name and fame as leading tenor in Mr. J. C. Williamson's Companies is wellknown throughout Australasia.
