GOLD IN UREWERA COUNTRY.

{Special to the "Auckland Star.")

GISBORXE, this day.

With reference to the arrangements, recently made by the Native Minister for prospecting for gold in the Urewera country, an old Parliamentary paper relating to the Maori War shows that Col. St. John reported that Capt. (now Colonel) Porter had handed him a specimen of gold bearing quartz which, he had found there. Colonel Porter mentions that on another occasion Tn« force came across a party of volunteers, who were at first mistaken for TTsmhanp and were captured. They had been engaged prospecting, and had good indications of gold.
