THE CAMPBELL STATUE.
THE UNVEILING CESEaHJHT,
A meeting of the CAmpbell Status 1 Fund Committee was held on Wednesday ! afternoon in the secretary's (Mr W. JE. Holmes) office, the Eon. E. Mitchelsoa presiding. The chairman mentioned that the whole cost of the statue had "been voluntarily 'subscribed, but that the cost of erecting, insurance and incidental expenses would require another £150. Notification was received from His Excellency the Governor stating that he would come np specially, in response to tbe committee's invitation,-in order to unveil the statue. It was mentioned that Cornwall Park was accepted on behalf of the people by the Prince of Wales an Empire Day, and the committee then agreed to fix on May 24 as an appropriate date for the ceremony ;to take place, with His Excellency's approval. The -work of erecting the statue and pedestal should, in the opinion: of the committee, be entrusted to Mr & Fallon, the present contractor. The New Zealand Shipping Co.'s steamer Eakaia, which is due about Saturday next, carries the statue from England freight free. Mr Pegram, the sculptor, in a letter to the committee, pointed out that the weight of the monument was sufficient to keep it in place, but in order to give greater security in this respect the founders had cast a bronze dowel at the feet. The manager of the Auck land electric Tramways (Mr P. M. Hansen) wrote offering to place at Sir John and Lady Campbell's disposal on the day of the ceremony the first electric car built in Auckland. The company would have the car suitably decorated and fitted with armchairs. It was decided to acquaint Sir John with Mr Hansen's offer and ascertain his views.
