TROOPS GIVE SHORT SHRIFT TO THE THIEVES,
LONDON, April 19. The Federal authorities in Chicago advise that the killed number thousands, and another account gives the number at 2500. It is reported that the'suburb of Berkeley is destroyed. It contained the HiJniversstji of California and other State institutions. '• Troops are guarding the banks, and cavalry and infantry are patrolling the streets, and are instructed to shoot thieves, who have already begun the work of plundering. General Funston has practically established martial law. SUMMARY EXECUTION OF FOUR LOOTERa (Received 10.11 aan.) NEW YORK, April 19. The troops continue to maintain summary jurisdiction, and four men have been shot for looting.
