POLICE COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before Messrs. G. Rainey and P. M. Mackay, JJ'.'s.)

The Inebriates.—Bartholomew Maloney, upon being convicted of drunkenness for 'the second time within six months, was fined £1, with costs, or 48 hours' imprisonment. Two first offenders -were fined 5s each. Frank Orren, an elderly man who alleged he vras so deaf that he could not hear a sound, was informed in writing that he was convicted of drunkenness for the fourth time ■within 6ix months. Being a, prohibited person, as well as possessing a bad record, he was sentenced to three months' hard labour.

A Stand-up Fight.—Pleading guilty to a charge of disturbing the peace by engaging in a stand-up fight in Marketsquare, Samuel Lauder paid a penalty of £1, with costs.

Alleged Housebreaking.—Thos. Tapp, junior, a youth, was remanded to bo tried in Wanganui eight days hence upon a charge of breaking and entering the dwelling of Charles Coleman at Wanganui on March 2nd, stealing a quantity of jewellery and money valued at £11 18s Cd. Chief Detective Marsack informed the Court that the accused practically admitted the charge. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £50 each.

A Dangerous Practice.—John Patterson was fined 5/ with 7/ costs, for standing a cart in Poneonby-road in a position otherwise than parallel to the tram linee. The police stated that the defendant's method of backing his cart into the pavement was exceedingly dangerous where there was tram traffic.

Alleged Assault and Robbery.—A young sailor named Charles Winter, who appeared without a coat, was charged with having assaulted and robbed Robert Speer of £4 in notes and money yesterday. Upon the application /of Sergeant Hendry a» remand was granted until Wednesday, bail being allowed jin two sureties of £SO each.

Boys and Bantams. —Two schoolboys pleaded guilty to the theft of two bantam fowls value 10/. It was shown that while the owner, an Eden Terrace resident, was away from home, the boys entered his premises and took the fowls away. In consideration of their previous good character the defendants were given the alternative of a fine.
