ISLAND WRECKS.
WRECK OF THE COUNTY OF ROXBURGH.
TEH , HUM DROWNED. The three-masted schooner County of Roxburgh, Captain Lesley, bound from Caldera (Chili) to Melbourne, in ballast, was caught by the gale on February 6th. The crew of 24 men arrived here by the Taviuni. We have been supplied with the following account of the occurrence: — For two days the wind blew hard. No land was in sight. On the Bth, at six o'clock in the evening, we got right off land, and were immediately brought to by a big wave that carried the vessel over the reef of the island of Takaroa (Inamatus). Nine men got oq in a boat, which capsized, and seven of the men were drowned. Two were saved owing to life twite. They were the two apprentices, Richardson and Sterling. They did not know how to swim.
Out of the men that remained on board two, Handerson and Parson, were washed overboard. A third one, Wagner, an expert swimmer, jumped into the sea and was drowned.
The ten men lost are: Herd, Distil, Alderog, Parsons, Wagner, sailor, Weigner, sailor, two Andersons, seilors, Koch, Cordis.
The 14 men saved are: Captain Lesley, Miller, third mats, Ockendon, second mate, Brown, third mate, Roberts, cook, Krahl, Hendrick, Sterling, apprentice, Richardson, apprentice, Bradisto, Robson, Ceace, Marshall, Harris.
I They remained three weeks on the island, which was devasted by the storm. , They got their food from the vessel. They fed the natives nntil they were rescued by the schooner lenvuriarohai I which brought nine of them to Papette, where they were brought by the care of the English Consulate to the Hotel dv Louvre. Six men remained on the island trith the captain, three arrived at Papeete on the 28th March on the schooner Pakarever, and two others on the France Australe. The sixth man remained on the island, where he intends to marry a Pnamotu girl. Three of thee Tew went to America by the Marihosa, the rest arriving by the TaviunL SCHOONER WRECKED. TWO MEN DROWNED. The schooner Tahitienne, commanded by Captain Georges Detter. Iβ lost. Only two natives were saved. Captain Detter remained two days on a raft before sinking in the waves. TTis second, Mr Sheves, remained one day on another raft. The two men that were saved were five days, on a raft before being able to land on an island. Thoy say that numbers of big sharks followed the wreck, and the captain and second mate weTe eaten by them as soon as they fell in the water.
It is reported that a mattress and a pillow belonging to Mr Ed. Bonnefin, who was an board the schooner Eimeo, has been found. There is a great fear that the schooner has been wrecked near Rangiroa Island. Up to the present there is no certainty about that schooner. The schooner St. Michel started some time ago for the Marquesas Islands where the Eimeo was bound to for the purpose of looking for this schooner. She is not back yet.
