CARDIFF NEW DOCKS.
An Important Extension
LONDON, April 9. The Marqui3 of Bute is investing £2,500,000 in new docks at Cardiff.
INo diminution in the enormous export of steam coal from South Wales is apprehended if the extensive wet dock in Cardiff accommodation is to be further enlarged. Cardiff already possesses five large wet docks, having a total deep water area of 1522 acres, and 25.350 feet length of quay accommodation, fitted with the most modern appliances for rapid coal loading. By means of hydraulic power, trucks of coal are lifted in the slings of a powerful crane, suspended over the ship's hatches, emptied, "and returned to the sidings in less than a, minute. Extensive accommodation is also available for importation, a large quantity of iron ore consigned from Spanish and Italian ports to the ! Welsh ironworks being handled in | the Bute Docks. The nature of the extension scheme is not mentioned in the cable, but it must I necessarily mean the construction of I another large wet dock, and may be in- ! tended to provide additional facilities I for trade between the colonies and ! West of England ports, -which has only < been inaugurated of recent years.]
