WELLINGTON NOTES;

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day., CASE OF THE PRISONER ALLAN". The Minister for Justice has received a letter from Dr. Bennett of the Wairau Hospital, respecting the case of the prisoner Allan, who was treated in the hospital for typhoid contracted at Dmngree prison camp. In the course of the letter, Dr. Bennett says that the prison authorities have always treated him with courtesy, and that he hopes he has always done the same by them. The doctor adds that the statement made in the "Maryborough Herald" that- the Minister for Justice communicated direct with the prisoner was absolutely untrue. He had asked the editor to contract the statement. MR SEDDON AND THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. One of New Zealand's highest educational authorities stated to the representative of a Wairarapa paper that since the advent of Mr Seddon as Minister for Education the Department and the Boards, which were generally in a state of drift, had been galvanised into life-, much to the betterment of young New Zealand. The trouble used to be (continued the authority that neither Ministers nor Boards felt disposed to get out of the old moss-grown track, and the result was stagnation and apathy moat lamentable. The change in three years under Mr Seddon has been most marked, and is indeed surprising. At the present time a scholar may, if he is clever, walk right from the infants class to the university without costing his parents a penny for teaching.
