POLICE COURT.

THIS DAY. Messrs R, 0. Hendy and D. Hewitt. J s.P.. presided over to-day's sitting of the Police Court. Drunkenness.—Elaine Norman, a prohibited person, was fined £1 and costs for being "drunk in a railway carriage Wju. Angell Marflett. who xv&a found lying in the middle of the street during the heavy rain last" night,, was ..fined 10/ and cost*, in default 48 hours.' *

Disreputable Characters.—A woman named Annie Irwin. about 35 years of age, pleaded not guilty to being an idle and disorderly persou in that she had insufficient lawful meane of support, with consorting with reputed thieves and prostitutes, and with keeping a brothel. John • Ward, commission agent,, s-tated that hs had heard foul language issuing from the accused's house, and had seen men visiting it axall hours of the night. Ada Purch*";boardinghouse keeper, gave evidence to similar effect. Constables Douthett and Ward and Detective McCarthy gave evidence as to accused's character, and the Bench holding the three charges proved, sentenced the woman to three months' imprisonment. Cissie Pollock, a compajiion to Irwin, was similarly charged on the first two counts, and also with assisting in the management of a brothel. After evidence to similar effect had 'been heard, accused was sentenced to three .months' ihard labour.

Bray, a hawker, who sells fruit in .Queen-street, -was charged "with obstructing the. traffic in Queen-street, .by allowing his hand-cart to remain thereqn.and by disturbing the -peace of the neighbourhood by; crying •his -waree.
