THE SQUADRON.
The flagship Powerful and H.M.S. Prometheus returned to port last evening, accompanied by H.M.e. Challenger, which arrived at Waiwera from Lytteltdh on Wednesday evening last. All the vessels of the fleet are now in port, the other boats being the Encounter and the Pegasus. The warships will not go out for practice again until early next week. It is expected that the flagship and H.M. ships Challenger and Prometheus will leave for Sydney nexi Monday 1 week.
The annual prize firing competition between the vessels of the squadron was commenced last Tuesday, but owing to the thick weather coming on it had to be discontinued, and the boats returned to port a day earlier than was intended. So far tlie Powerful is the only vessel that has taken part in the competition. Her gunners put in some good firing last Tuesday, when with the 6in guns they secured 93 hits out 110 shots. On the following day, out of six shots, five hits were secured with the 9.2 in guns. The (Pegasus is at present the holder of the shield.
