LAWN TENNIS.
The unsettled state of the weather on Saturday last prevented the majority of the matches in the Inter-club Competition being played. All matches in the West End v. Eden and Epsom draw will be played this afternoon. Parnell were able to play their games against Devonport, and managed to annex the majority of tbe eventa The following are the results:—Men's A: Evans and Madden (Parnell) v. Brabant and Macky (Devonport), 6 —l, 6—3. Men's B: Redman and Warner (Parnell) v. Cox and Mowbray (Devonport), 4 —6, 6—l, 6 —4. Ladies' A: Miss Holmes and Miss Bellairs (Parnell) v. Miss Harvey and Mrs Swan (Devonport), o—6, I—6. Ladies' B: Misses Atkinson and Davy (Parnell) v. Misses Cardno and Cousins (Devonport), 6—2, 6--2. Combined A: Cooke and Mrs Cooper (Parnell), v. Le Sieur and Miss Parsons (Devonport), 4—6, 5-H5. Combined B: Hunt and Miss Preece (Pamell) v. Macky and Miss Metcalfe (Devonport), 3—6, 6—5, 6—3. Owing to alteration in the teams two of the matches have to be re-played. In the Auckland v. Onehunga match the result is pending, some of the matches being played, and the remainder are to be played this afternoonMr H. A. Parker will be passing through Auckland shortly, and will play most likely on the Eden and Epsom courts. The Singles Handicap and Combined Handicap events of the West End Club have reached the final stage. Sheriff (rec. 4-6 15) plays the winner of Dr. Keith and Goldie. Sheriff has improved wonderfully for a first season clubplayer, and has done exceptionally well to work himself into the final. Combined Handicap: Dr. and Mrs Keith (owe 15 1-6) beat J. Paterson and Mis 9A. Nicholson (owe 40), 6—2, 3—6, 6—3; Gittos and Mrs Manning (rec, 15) beat Baker and Miss Knight (owe 4-6 15), 3—6, 6—3, 6—4. Mr B. Gittos and Mrs Manning play Dr. and Mrs Keith iv the final of the Combined. The ladies of the West End Club held their annual "Ladies" day on Tuesday last. The weather was perfect. About 60 players were present, including representatives from all of the clubs in Auckland. Progressive tennis was played during the afternoon. The arrangements were well carried out, reflecting credit on the club's lady members in general, and on Miss J. Paterson in particular. Play commenced at 1.30 sharp, players being divided into A and B grades. In the A grade the final match was between Mrs Cooper and Mrs Manning and Mrs Churton and Miss Stewart. Mrs Cooper and Mrs Manning won after a very even and good game, Mrs Cooper's excellent net play being largely responsible for the victory. In the B grade Mrs Palethorpe played off with Miss Murten. Mrs Palethorpe obtained the first prize and Miss Murten the second prize. The first round of the handicap events in the Devonport tournament is now complete. The following matches have been played to date:— Men's Singles.—A. F. Howarth (owes 15) beat Young (owe 15) —6-3, 6-2; A. F. Howarth received a bye from C. Brabant; C. Bartley (receive 3-6 15) beat R, Macky (receive 15) —6-5, 6-2. Ladies' Singles.—Miss Harvey (owe 30) beat Miss Cardno (receive 15) — 6-5, 6-4; Miss D. Metcalfe (receive 3-6 15) beat Miss Prime (receive 15 2-6) — 6-5, 1-6, 6-4. Combined Doubles.—Redman and Miss E. Alison (scratch) beat C. Brabant and Miss Mason (owe 3-6 15) — 0-4, 6-3; K. Howarth and Mrs Swan (owe 3-6 15) beat H. C. Rishworth and Miss Handley (receives 15) —6-4, 6-2; Hall and Miss Cameron (scratch) beat Warner and Mrs Young (receives .3-6 15)—6-1, 3-6. 6-3; R. Macky and Miss T. Alison (receive 15) bca-t H. R. Cooke and Miss Harvey (owe 40) —4-G, 6-5 6-2. Ladies' Doubles.—Miss Harvey and Miss Cousins (owe 30) beat Miss Prime and Miss Cardno (receive 3-6 15) —1-6, 6-3, 6-4; Mrs Cooper and Mrs Swan (owe 40) beat Miss T. Alison and Miss Mason (receive 15) —6-4, 6-5. C. Brabant has been removed to the Bank of New South Wales at Napier, and left town last Tuesday. As a result he has had to forfeit all his matches in the Devonport tournament. The Devonport Club's new pavilion is now. nearing completion, and should supply a long-felt want. Mr L. T. Piekmere, who is the Auckland candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship, is a member of the Eden and Epsom Club. Piekmere is playing well at present, and should develop into a first-class player.
