■ (By Telegraph.—own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. Arrangements. are now- actually i* progress for putting the Workers' Dwellings Act into active operation. says "The Post," and the time is not far distant when a start will actually be made with the erection of the first of these edifices. The.chief administration of the scheme has been tested in the Land Purchase Department, of which Mr A. Barron is chief, and land for the purpose has already been acquired at the Hutt and Petone. and at Dunedin and Auckland. Negotiations ■have not yet been completed for the purchase of any land at Christehureh, but the Crown has a reserve there on which buildings are to be erected. At Timaru, negotiations are in progress ! with various owners for the purchase of land, and the position is the same at Oaniaru and Invcrcargill. Mr Barron has also received instructions to acquire land at Aramoho and Gisborne, and an arrangement to that end is proceeding. The Government also proposes to erect workers dwellings near the State coal mines, but there they will probably be erected on Crown lands. At Wellington land at Polhill gully lias been set apart for the purposes of workers dwellings. The plans, it may be added, are for houses of various descriptions suitable for all classe of sections, and are of a class greatly in advance of the holises in which the worker has now to find a., home. Regulations arc now being made dealing with the manner in which application for workers dwellings will be made to the Land Board, which will ideal with applications.
