South African war. * j Archbishop Can*, of Melbourne, and Bishop Higgins, of Ballarat. arrived at i Christehureh yesterday, to take part in the celebration of the first anniversary of the opening of the Roman Catholic Cathe- I dral. j Vicc-Adniirnl Sir Wilruot Fawkes and the officers of the squadron were guests at a ball given by the Nary League in the Town Hall at Wellington last night. Mr. William Potter, late manager to the Tramways Company, and recently receiving cierk at Epsom* was the recipient of a handsome presentation yesterday from .the officials and employees of the Auckland Electric Tramways Company, on his retirement after eighteen years' service. ' . • The Black Family of musicians, who Lave just concluded a very successful tour of North Auckland and the Bay of Plenty district, left Auckland to-day for Gisborne. They continue their journey to the South Island, and return here in Julynext. Miss Nellie Black's hand, injured some time ago. is now quite recovered, and retains, no bad effects of the accident. Mr. Daniel Fitzgerald, the well-known circus proprietor, died recently of heart disease in a. private hospital in Melbourne. Deceased was senior member of i the firm of Fitzgerald Bros., and was born I in Auckland in 1859. He weut when a j child to New South Wales "with his parents, who settled in the Illawarra district. He began his circus career with Mr. Burton.
