(By Telegraph.—Preee Association.) SUPREME COURT SENTENCES. WELLINGTON, this day. The Chief Justice to-day imposed the following sentences: Robbery—Michael Kepran, eighteen months; Henry G. Quinn. twenty-two months; William Courtenay, two years. For indecent assault —Allan Talbert, nine months. POLICE OFFICER'S DEATH. TIMARU, this day. Sergeant Warring, officer-m-charg* of police here, died this morning. The sergeant caught a. chill a fortnight ago. Complications ensued, and pneumonia was the cause of death. The late officer, who was nlways looked upon as most efficient, did police duty at Home and had been in the New Zealand force for over 20 years. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1898. and was to have been further promoted this year. He was born in Cornwall in 1850. He leaves a wife and -nine children. SEAMEN'S UNION DISPUTE. DUNEDIN, this day. At to-day's sitting of the Arbitration Court Mr Belcher continued his address. He said the preference of employment danse had given rise to moTe controversy than any other clause in the award. The Seamen's Union ever since the Arbitration Act had been in existence had been, contending for the prinr ciple of preference of employment to its members. The Court had not thought fit to grant that to seamen, although there had never been any substantial reason advanced by the Court in refusing to grant the request. Tbe Seamen's Union had 95 per cent, of the men employed in their union, arid no other organisation could say they had 05 per cent, of the workers at their particular trade in their union. NELSON, this day. Lieutenant Watts, of the Nelson College Cadets, has been notified that he has been granted a commission as second lieutenant of the Second Northamptonshire Regiment of the Imperial Army. He hae been instructed to leave for England at once. , Messrs. James Rankin, W. J. Moffatt, Thomas Hewetson, John Heath, John Guy, Thomas Pattie and Horatio Everett have been elected members of the Motneka Harbour Board.
