The Government has granted £3500 for the erection of a technical school in brick, in New Plymouth. Many Lancashire operatives are revolting against the employment of Labour Union funds for political purposes. Six workingmen, three being Liberals and three Conservatives, all favour tariff reform after a visit to Oennany. Mr Balfour has accepted the offer ol the Hon. Aiban Gibbs to retire from the representation of the Uity of London in his favour. An area of 20 acres ot land, opposite the Lower Hutt Railway Station, Wellington, has been bought by a syndicate for £30,000. From the 18th to 22nd inst. 510 trout were caught at Rotorua, the aggregate weight being 17471b. On Friday a Impounder was caught. Miss Jessie Aekercnan, a missionary, recently put on a diver's suit in Ceylon, and brought up from the paara, or pearl oyster beds, seven valuable pearls. The Cape Premier (Dr. Jameson) anticipates the very early concession of gpvemment to the Transvaal and the Orange River Colony. The Premier says that rather, than allow New Zealand to come under the heel of the shipping companies we might as well have steamers of our own and carry freights. A sale of leases look place at Rotorua yesterday. Eighty-nine .sections were submitted and 34 sold. In most eases the sections brought more than the upset price, and in some cases double. A self- levelling bunk for the prevention of sea-sickness, which has been tried for some years past on the Dover Calais service, has been found so successful that it is proposed to mstai it on all steamers. As a consequence of disaster, Charing Uross Station will re* main closed until February. Those familiar with this terminus—one of tbe eight greater stations of London—will realise the dislocation of traffic that this will involve. At a meeting attended by 28 business men held in Timaru, it was resolved to reestablish the Chamber of Commerce for South Canterbury. Mr J. P.
