A CHINESE CASE.
FIVE CHARGES OF HOUSEBREAKDTG.
A muscular little Chinaman named Ah Sing, alias Ah Wong, alias Gong George, was charged at the Auckland Police Court before Mr Dyer, S.M., yesterday, with a series of alleged robberies at houses of Chinamen at the Western Springs. The occupants of the residences alleged to have been rcbb*d and the articles stolen were the following:— Wong Som, 3 sovereigns, a pound note, 3/1 in small change, and a watch ■md chain; Yet Lee, a sharpening st ne; Wong Kow, a razor, and 2/ worth of coppers; Tung Loy, articles of wearing apparel, valued at £15..; and Ah Fong ( by night) £3 in money. Wong Som said that when he missed the articles from his house he found a shisel (produced) lying on the floor. Wong Kow, Tung Hoy, and Yet Lee ■rave evidence of robberies at their several dwellings. John Mendoza said the accused Dawned a watch and chain (produced), one of the missing articles, at his shop. Detective Mcllveney said that when rrested in Wakefield-street in connee ion with another charge prioner wa=s ■'I'nrinpr the stolen trousers. Gradually •ther missing articles were traced to the iccused, and also a Guy Fawke mask nd a key which opened Wong Som's front door quite easily." * Detective McCartney also gave evidence. Accused was further charged with having broken into the premises of Ah Fong by night and stolen £3. The evidence of several. Chinese witnesses was to the effect that a tomahawk mark was found on the back door vhen the burglary was discovered, and in one of the rooms was found a tomahawk which belonsred to a man at whose house the prisoner lodged. His Worship said he did not think the evidence on the last case sufficient for i committal, and the case was therefore dismissed. On the other four charges prisoner was committed for trial.
