GIRL SMUGGLER'S FLIGHT.
3000 MILE CHASE AFTER A NECKLACE. It became known in. New York on October 10th, that a young , woman of great wealth and holding a high position in New York society recently caused an. exciting chase through endeavouring to prevent the se ure of a smuggled pearl necklace, valued at nearly £5000. The name of the young woinau is .kept a. close secret. The Treasury Department some time ago learned of the pnrc-hase of the necklace abroad, and ordered the Customs inspectors to watch for It. It was eventually discovered that the girl had landed without I declaring it, cleverly evading the inspectors. When ordered to give up the necklace sh? ilefi to Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, aud back to New York, leading the detectives a chase of nearly 3000 miles. A few nights ago the chase ended when the yong woman, while seated in a bos at a leading theatre, wae suddenly confronted by detectives, who threatened her with arrest. She pleaded to be spared the and was allowed to go on condition that the necklace was immediately surrendered. Next day the family lawyer brought the leckla-ce to tli" Customs House, and deposited a cheque for £2600 in payment oi nhe duty. The Treasury Department is now considering whether to confiscate the lecklac-? or whether the fluty and a lapge additional fine can be accepted .as sufficient punishment.
